I looked at my calendar and saw 60 one-hour client calls booked.
Sixty.
That meant 60 hours of explaining the same things over and over. 60 hours of dealing with clients who weren’t actually implementing the work. 60 hours of chasing people who said they wanted results but weren’t willing to do what it actually took to get them.
And after each session?
I felt like I needed a Johnnie Walker on the rocks at 10 am.
Because here’s the truth:
90% of my clients were draining me.
I had dug myself into a hole. I wasn’t a consultant anymore—I was an on-demand customer service fulfillment center.
And the worst part? I did it to myself.
The Breaking Point
I didn’t start my business to be a 24/7 customer support rep. But that’s exactly what I had become.
Every call felt the same.
➡️ The same questions over and over.
➡️ The same clients refusing to implement the strategy we agreed on.
➡️ The same last-minute, reactionary changes to execution plans.
I wasn’t consulting—I was babysitting.
Why did I let this happen?
Desperation.
When bills are coming at you from every direction, when you’re constantly thinking about cash flow, when the fear of not having enough grips you... you say yes to anyone who will pay.
At first, it seems logical.
✅ More clients = More money, right?
✅ Pack your calendar, grind it out, and you’ll break through, right?
Wrong.
When you’re desperate, you don’t think long-term.
You just grab whatever’s in front of you. And that’s exactly how I ended up drowning in nightmare clients.
The Hard Truth
I had convinced myself that more clients would fix everything.
That if I just lowered my prices a bit, I could get more volume. That if I worked harder, I could keep up. That if I delivered more value, clients would magically become better.
And then it hit me:
Cheap clients are the most expensive.
They:
🚩 Demand the most.
🚩 Respect you the least.
🚩 Suck up all your time and energy.
That’s when I had my wake-up call:
👉 I wasn’t just selling my time—I was selling my expertise. And that had real value.
It wasn’t about working more—it was about working smarter.
It wasn’t about grinding harder—it was about setting boundaries.
The Shift That Changed Everything
I knew I needed a client selection system—a way to filter out low-value clients before they ever got on a call with me.
So I built boundaries. From that moment forward, a client had to meet three criteria to work with me:
1️⃣ They had to have momentum in place.
I stopped working with people who were just thinking about starting.
I wanted doers, not dreamers. Because the reality is, if someone is waiting for you to make them take action, they’re already a bad client.
2️⃣ They had to be willing and able to do the work.
No more hand-holding. No more clients who expected me to build their business for them while they sat back and watched.
If you aren’t willing to put in the work, you’re not my client.
I needed people who would take ownership of their success. Because the only clients who ever get real results are the ones who actually execute.
3️⃣ They had to be willing and able to invest in themselves.
Clients who hesitate to invest in themselves are almost always the hardest to work with.
🚩 They second-guess everything.
🚩 They need constant reassurance.
🚩 They don’t trust the process.
The best clients? They know that investing in the right guidance is the fastest way to success.
The Results: Fewer Clients, Bigger Impact
Once I started enforcing these criteria, everything changed.
✅ I started doing deep work.
✅ I got fewer clients—but my revenue didn’t drop.
✅ I had more time to focus on helping those clients actually get results.
This wasn’t just about working less. It was about working better.
Less reactionary work. More deep, fulfilling work.
It reminded me of a book that perfectly explains this phenomenon: “10X is Easier Than 2X.”
The idea is simple:
🔹 It’s actually easier to grow exponentially than incrementally—because exponential growth forces you to focus on what truly matters.
🔹 Instead of stretching yourself thin across too many clients, you focus on a handful of the right ones—and deliver game-changing results.
And guess what? The right clients are willing to pay for that level of expertise.
